March 2008- Book Binding Options: Form Should Follow Function

Binding is more than just joining the assembled pages of a printed piece together. Ideally, it’s where form should follow function to produce the best printed book possible. From adhesive binding to saddle stitching to Smyth sewn case binding, book binding methods ultimately depend on the type of printed product being bound.

The first step is to determine what type of binding style should be used. If you are unsure, get your printing partner involved. Your friends at Delta Printing Solutions are involved with hundreds of book projects a month and are well-prepared to make sound bindery recommendations for your next book project.

An Iffy Proposition …

  • If your book needs to make a long lasting, top-of-the-line high quality impression, case binding may be your preferred method, assuming you have the budget for it.
  • If your book is going to sit stacked on shelves for reference purposes, versatile perfect binding might be the perfect choice.
  • If your book needs to lie flat during use, consider Wire-O, plastic spiral or some other mechanical binding style.
  • If you need to combine lay-flat properties with a small budget, lay-flat Otabind adhesive binding may do the trick.
  • If your book is going to be used in difficult climate conditions, PUR adhesive binding deserves a look.
  • If your book is going to be short-lived, perhaps a giveaway, economical saddle stitching may be the right choice.

Two for the Road …

  • Trim allowance: Make sure there’s adequate space for the trim so you don’t have text or copy within 1/4” of the trim area on the folios of the book.
  • Check on spine width: Check with your printer to get the appropriate spine width so you can design the spine of your book accurately. This depends on such factors as paper type, page length and what the cover bulks up to.

As the old adage goes, lead with need. Most books have a set of user requirements and these are what should drive book design. Which brings us to our first point, form should follow function.
